Consult Australia's Safety in Design course is an intensive two day seminar which addresses safety issues relating to design and provides practical tools on how to eliminate hazards at the design stage. Examples from practitioners will be provided and the far-reaching implications of recent legislative changes will be addressed as they relate to each state.

About the course
The first day of the training introduces the five principles of SiD and emphasises how designers can use these principles to impact on safety outcomes. Delegates are given a thorough breakdown of the legislative framework, including state specific duties, and advised on their legal obligations. An investigation of the proposed new duties of care under the model National OHS Act will inform delegates on how to improve health and safety in both their business conduct and in the design of structures.
Systematic risk management is vital. Several tools for hazard identification are provided on the course. Methods of risk assessment and risk control are outlined with reference to the hierarchy of control. Practical skills are developed in this area through discussions, workshops and case study analysis. An extensive resource bank is provided to keep delegates up-to-date with industry best practice.
Some of the key benefits for participants are being provided with templates to document SiD and being trained on how to incorporate SiD procedures into their day-to-day activities. At the end of the course attendees will have improved their critical understanding and thinking of Safety in Design. Delegates will have also gained access to the best methods and practices that industry is currently promoting and using. This course has helped engineers from all disciplines, project managers, architects and safety managers to develop a powerful approach to Safety in Design and market this skill to clients.

Safety in Design Toolkit
In addition to the Safety in Design course, consult Australia has developed and launched a set of guidance tools to assist consulting firms to comply with their obligations under new model workplace health and safety (WHS) laws, and to ensure safer design of structure and plant, leading to safer workplaces in the construction and manufacturing sectors.As of April 10, 2013 the Toolkit is available free to Consult Australia members and can be located in the members' section of the website under the advocacy tab.
All Safety in Design course attendees will receive a copy of the toolkit. For non-members this is built into the price of their course attendance fee at a heavily discounted rate. For those who have not attended Safety in Design and are not Consult Australia members the toolkit can be purchased at the price of $750 (+GST). Past attendees of the Safety in Design that would like to purchase the toolkit can purchase this at the heavily discounted rate of $300 (+GST).
