Leadership Through Adversity

FutureNet WA is proud to present Garth Callender; ex-Australian Army Major, critically acclaimed author and now Manager of the Veterans Employment Program for New South Wales. In the week following ANZAC day Garth will provide a timely reminder of the effort and sacrifice made by our contemporary veterans through his own personal story of some 17 years of distinguished service.

Following graduation from the Royal Military College Duntroon, Garth deployed multiple times to the Middle Eastern Area of Operations (MEAO), including twice to Iraq (2004 & 2006) and once to Afghanistan (2009). It was during his first deployment to Iraq that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated next to the armoured convoy vehicle he was commanding at the time. The size and impact of the blast was so severe that he was left critically injured and fighting for his life. Upon emergency medical evacuation from the battlefield he was subsequently airlifted to Germany to receive further critical medical treatment that saved his life.

After many months of recovery Garth decided to return to Iraq in 2006 taking on the important role as second-in-command of the Australian Army’s security detachment in Baghdad. After returning from his second tour of Iraq, Garth then joined a specialist technical unit which focused on countering the threat of IED’s to servicemen and women deployed within the Middle East. He then deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 as the weapons intelligence team leader focusing on mitigating IED risks on the battlefield.

Having now transitioned to the civil sector, Garth manages the Veterans Employment Program on behalf of the New South Wales Government and has also written the critically acclaimed book entitled ‘After the Blast’. FutureNet is privileged to have Garth come and talk to us so soon after ANZAC Day for what will be a very raw and gripping account of the events both before and ‘After the Blast’.
