Blueprint for Master Planning

FutureNet WA is pleased to present our next event for 2017 which will focus on the Master Planning process, some of its inherent challenges, and what it means to get it right. This panel style event will feature several experts from within this highly-specialised field, all of whom have extensive experience both locally and abroad. This is another event not to be missed!

As new technologies emerge and our understanding of the world that we live in changes, it is crucial that our cities are well planned. As Master Planners, experts like Ryan Keys, Chris Melsom and Norion Ubechel are responsible for providing comprehensive blueprints to government and industry clients which in turn can profoundly influence both public policy and our broader built environment. As our expert panellists will explain, in order for such plans to translate into practical success, Master Planners require both a technical understanding of the complex and interconnected systems at play in our cities, as well as an appreciation for the cultures and peoples that live and work within them. This next thought provoking FutureNet event, facilitated by Matt McKenzie of WA Business News, will draw on our panellists combined 50+ years’ experience working within the planning field and in turn try to unlock the recipe for a successful and translatable Master Plan.

Panellists:

• Chris Melsom is a registered Architect and Registered Planner with 30 years’ experience. He is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia, previous Principle at HASSELL and a long-term member of the AIA. Chris Chairs the Australian Urban Design Research Centres’ Education and Professional Practice Advisory Committee. His strong interest in sustainability and in designing for the future is evident in his practice’s focus on major urban renewal and redevelopment projects.

• Norion Ubechel is an urban strategist and planning professional with over 10 years’ experience. He is currently the manager for campus planning at Curtin University’s Properties Department. Norion has applied his unique design thinking and creative problem-solving brain to drive major projects in the US and Australia.

• Ryan Keys is the Executive Director of Planning at the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and is responsible for overseeing project initiation, urban design, strategy and statutory planning across MRA's redevelopment areas of Central Perth, Armadale, Midland, Scarborough and Subiaco.
